What’s on My Bookshelf: Fashion Edition series part 9
Style
Kate Spade, 2004
I have several Kate Spade bags and some accessories. I included a Kate Spade bag in a post as recently as last week. Even the dog in my life rocks a Kate Spade matching collar and leash. Learning that she was a midwesterner turned accomplished New Yorker – I must respect her.
When I think of the brand, I think of color, fun, and maximalist. This is quite the opposite of myself. But the way her style came naturally to Kate could be felt through the pages.
Some of her favorite things included anything whicker, pencil cases as evening bags, and sling-back shoes. She loved bright, saturated colors and patterns. One of the color combinations she wrote about that I might try sometime is turquoise with brown.
I love the style references to people like Babe Paley and Diana Vreeland. The mention of Vreeland’s “Why don’t you….?” column makes me want to dive more into the history of her work. In general, throughout the book, Kate drops random historical facts such as the origin of the zipper that keep someone like me interested.
I understood the Funny Face reference when it comes to the color pink after finally seeing the movie for the first time a couple of weeks ago (also Diana Vreeland-inspired). Kate’s adoration for the color green, and occasional details of cigarette pants, are perfect vibes for those participating in Brat summer for those who understand what I mean.
She also shares informative information for the girls such as how to remove certain kinds of stains from your clothes perhaps after a wine night. The format in which she wrote the book is respectably creative.
