Men’s Fashion: The Complete Sourcebook

John Peacock, 1996

This is a super informational book covering almost two centuries worth of men’s fashion (from 1789 to 1995). I love this book because it reminds me of the stuff I learned in my history of costume class in college. There are great illustrations with details on what’s worn in each one. That makes for a lot of reading, but it’s also such a cool resource to have.

The book includes a chart of the development of men’s fashion by decade breaking down what the trends were during that time. At the end, there’s also some information on many designers who have greatly impacted fashion including Pierre Montana, Claude Montana, Ralph Lauren, and my favorite – Gianni Versace.

The most memorable outfit in the book? For me, that would be the 1983 illustration clearly inspired by Michael Jackson’s Thriller era complete with a red leather jacket. I think the fact that that specific outfit was included among hundreds of years worth of fashion shows just how iconic that look was.
