What’s on My Bookshelf: Fashion Edition series part 13
Perfect Is Boring: Ten Things My Crazy, Fierce Mama Taught Me About Beauty, Booty, and Being a Boss
Tyra Banks and Carolyn London, 2018
This is a book I’ve had for a few years. It’s quite possible that many of my interests, which I formed when I was younger, can be credited to Tyra Banks and America’s Next Top Model. Meeting a former winner I watched as a kid was one of my favorite college days.
You might gravitate toward this book if you are someone who loves the fashion industry and has a slight supermodel obsession like me. Throughout the book, Tyra speaks about her triumphs and low points alongside her mother. Although these days in the media you can find a lot of analysis on why ANTM was very problematic, there are still parts of her career as she evolved that I can respect.
I think what drew me to this book again was my newfound love for RuPaul’s Drag Race. I included a sprinkle of my RuPaul era last week. But even bigger than the music, there is the show. Essentially, RuPaul’s Drag Race and America’s Next Top Model are the same kind of competition show. But I’m finding as I watch Drag Race through adult lenses, there are so many inspirational and authentic elements to that show that make it feel superior to ANTM.
As cheesy as it sounds, Drag Race has motivated me to feel confident and understand who I am. Finding these messages in places that truly click for you, whether in a show, book, etc., can do the soul so well!
